WH Smith is the worlds largest stationers founded originally as a small family business in 1792. Henry Waltan Smith's Grandson, William Henry Smith was a highly successful businessman and set up a whole chain of shops around railway stations.

It is to him that we owe the WH Smith name. WH Smith was the first  to popularise books in the country by the introduction of the paperback. This was the first time most families had access to literature.

More recently WH Smiths acquired the Menzies chain - Scotland's largest stationers taking our tally of UK stationers over to 750 for the first time.

Overseas

Overseas, WH Smith has been taking American airports by storm, and we have increased our retail outlets across both the USA and Europe significantly over the last 10 years

During the last year we have developed our interactive web site www.whsmith.co.uk offering free Email, Web space and Internet access.
